Marilyn Rummel teaches lever harp - Celtic, Paraguayan and classical technique - at her studio in Duncan, BC. Her students range in age from children to seniors, and are at all levels of study.

She conducts both group and private lessons, according to the needs and learning styles of the students. You may study with the aim of taking RCM exams (now available on lever harp up to Gr. 9), or to pursue interests in folk music. Marilyn emphasizes understanding of music from the very beginning and a strong theory component is included in all the lessons.

Learning to play the harp is a wonderful introduction to music, it is a common second or third instrument for musicians, and because the initial stages are so enjoyable, it makes a good instrument for those who have always wished they could play something, but felt they were "too old to learn". Of course there is no such thing on any instrument, but the accessibility of harp playing makes it a good fit for an older beginner. Flute, recorder, and theory classes are also taught by Marilyn. Regardless of the instrument or level, joy, magic, beauty, fun, (and practice!) are the ingredients for successful study at this studio.

Rental harps are available for beginning students - please enquire.

Flute was Marilyn’s main instrument when she studied at Western Washington University, and remained so until she began to study the harp 20 years ago. She taught music for 3 years in the Quesnel School District to both secondary and elementary school students and was one of the founders of the elementary band program in the district. She has studied harp with Celtic and classical harpists including Sharlene Wallace, Kim Robertson and Sunita Stanislow, with Abel Sanchez Gimenez and Ruben Sanabria in Paraguay, and this past summer was privileged to spend a week studying intensively with Robin Huw Bowen, the foremost performer and teacher of the Welsh triple harp.

She's recently published, through Willow River Press, Harp Start - Book1, a book for the beginning harper, and its accompanying Guide for Teachers and Self-teachers. E-mail Marilyn for more info or see her website marilynrummel.ca
